The Bisesero Heritage Trail begins in the lakeside town of Kibuye and ends at the iconic Muyira Hill. Covering up to 22 kilometres, this guided journey combines history, culture, nature and community engagement, offering an immersive opportunity to understand one of the most remarkable stories of resilience in Rwanda's history.

The trail is inspired by the history of the Bisesero Tutsi, who demonstrated extraordinary civilian resistance and self-defence during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Thousands organised themselves to resist using traditional weapons and their knowledge of the rugged terrain. The Bisesero Memorial Site, part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Memorial Sites of the Genocide, preserves this legacy.

Experienced local guides provide historical interpretation along the route, explaining how geography influenced the resistance and highlighting the significance of key locations. From Muyira Hill, visitors understand why the landscape mattered so much to the defence — and take in one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in western Rwanda.

The trail is a community development initiative. A portion of every participation fee supports humanitarian programmes for genocide survivors, developed with local survivor associations. Visitors are warmly encouraged to bring voluntary donations such as food supplies, clothing, school materials or hygiene products.
