The Congo-Nile Trail offers an immersive trek along Lake Kivu, dividing Africa's two main river basins, with nature walks, lake views, scenic landscapes and community life throughout.
The Northern Section runs from Kibuye (Karongi) to Gisenyi (Rubavu) — roughly 90 km across 3 to 4 days on an unpaved route hugging the shoreline and rolling hills. Stages commence from Banana forest of nyamarebe , crossing running rivers over suspended bridges, coffee farms at the Kinunu and Cyimbiri washing stations, coastal fishing villages with traditional pottery and finally stop over at the BRALIRWA brewery into Rubona beach with its hot springs and night fishing boats.
The Southern Section runs from Kibuye to Rusizi (Cyangugu) — approximately 137 km over 5 to 6 days, exploring Methane gas power plant, hike through coffee farms with blacksmith and herbalist culture , rainforest borders at 20–28 km per day. Highlights include the Kumbya peninsula and its monkeys, Gisakura tea plantations, birdwatching near Nyungwe Forest National Park and panoramic views of the southern bays.
