The Lake Kivu Swimming Cows Experience is one of Rwanda's most extraordinary and little-known attractions, offering a spectacle that is virtually impossible to find anywhere else in the world. Set on the Mafundugu Islands, approximately 6 km from Kibuye (Karongi), it combines breathtaking lake scenery, living cultural traditions and a remarkable display of animal behaviour.

The tradition dates back more than five decades, when local families began raising cattle on the islands. As grazing areas became exhausted, herders trained the cattle to swim across the lake in search of fresh grass. Today the cows continue this daily routine, swimming from one island to another before returning to their calves later in the day.

Guests travel by boat alongside the cattle as they cross, then explore the grazing grounds, learn how herders manage livestock in an island environment, take part in traditional milking lessons and taste fresh milk.

Cattle occupy a special place in Rwandan culture, symbolising prosperity, dignity, friendship and family heritage. The experience celebrates that bond while supporting local livelihoods.
