The Lake Kivu Traditional Fishing Experience offers an authentic journey into one of Rwanda's most cherished living traditions. Practised for more than 70 years, it showcases the teamwork, resilience and heritage of local fishing communities. The adventure centres on the traditional three-boat formation, where wooden boats are connected and paddled in rhythm while fishermen sing traditional songs that coordinate their movements.

The fishermen target Tanganyika sardine (Isambaza), using lanterns at night to attract insects, which in turn draw fish to the surface for catching with traditional lift nets. The distinctive alignment of the three boats is believed to have been inspired by the war boats of King Kigeli IV Rwabugiri in the late nineteenth century.

The Night Fishing Experience begins as the sun sets, boarding at approximately 4:30 p.m. The glow of dozens of lanterns on the calm lake, with the fishermen's voices carrying across the water, creates an atmosphere unlike any other.

The Dawn Fishing Experience begins at 4:00 a.m. before first light, ending around 7:00 a.m. Visitors witness the final moments of the night's fishing, one of Rwanda's most beautiful sunrises, and the lively morning fish market where the catch is sold.
