Eco-Cultural Revitalization in Lake Kivu Islands

The Eco-Cultural Revitalization of Lake Kivu Islands Initiative is a community-led program by VISIT KIVU CBC that combines environmental conservation, cultural heritage preservation, sustainable tourism, and community empowerment. The initiative focuses on selected Lake Kivu islands, including Nyamunini (Napoleon Island), Nyenyeri, Amahoro, and Mafundugu.

The project will organize monthly clean-up campaigns to remove waste and improve the environmental condition of the islands. It will also trace 50 authentic walking trails, install 10 eco-friendly restrooms and 30 trash bins in strategic locations to promote hygiene and responsible waste management. Over five years, the initiative aims to plant 1,000 trees in appropriate areas, contributing to environmental restoration and biodiversity protection.

Through improved tourism experiences, including island exploration, hiking, boating, birdwatching, cultural activities, and the unique swimming cows experience, the project aims to attract 10,000 domestic and international tourists annually.

The initiative will directly support 500 community members, including boat captains, tour guides, fishermen, youth, women, cultural practitioners, and small entrepreneurs. It also aims to create 200 direct and indirect jobs within five years.

Ultimately, the initiative seeks to transform Lake Kivu islands into a model of community-led eco-cultural tourism, where environmental protection, cultural heritage, tourism, and local economic development work together for the benefit of present and future generations..
